Two FEU alumni are the first non-Korean artists to exhibit artworks in the famous Yeongwol Park Museum of South Korea.

Filipino Artists Dexter Sy and LJ Ablola, both graduates of fine arts in FEU, are set to hold an exhibition of their artworks in the well-renowned Yeongwol Park Museum. Yeongwol is a contemporary art museum in the outskirts of Seoul (Gangwon-do, South Korea) and has grown to be one of the go-to places of tourists and art enthusiasts due to its unique and stylish artworks. This year’s exhibition theme revolves around “Time” where the exhibitors will showcase how quickly time passes and how people change with it, especially during the pandemic. Sy will focus on the family, siblings, the individual, and relationships to a family over time. Whereas, Ablola’s theme will revolve around communities, social gatherings, and the quick pace of today’s event.

Sy and Ablola, who won numerous local and international art competitions and held several sold-out exhibits, possess different themes and styles. Sy, a Chinoy, deals with the complexities of two cultures he grew up in, assimilating these into his daily life through different values and religious beliefs. His style is meticulous, detailed, with complex patterns, often executed in mixed media. Ablola, on the other hand, was born and raised in the city with transient encounters with anonymous people, defines the urban setting through depictions of crowds as subject to her works. She often creates large flat areas to define space and incorporates lace, sequins, paper, and other materials to create texture. The exhibition will be held in the second half of 2021.
