A new species of seaweed named after an FEU alum

A new filamentous bangialean alga, Pseudobangia corderoi sp. nov., found in the northern Philippines, is named in honor of Dr. Paciente A. Cordero, Jr., a renowned Philippine phycologist and an esteemed alumnus of Far Eastern University. This new species of seaweed, locally known as a sea vegetable, was previously identified as ‘Bangia fuscopurpurea.’

Dr. Junn, as he is fondly called, is recognized for his significant contribution to phycological research. Both Filipino and foreign phycologists or algae experts have recognized his research on the morpho-taxonomy of marine algae, including edible seaweeds and sea vegetables. His scholarly work has contributed to understanding the biology of marine resources in the Philippines.

Dr. Junn finished his Bachelor of Science in Botany in 1963. In 2003, he was featured as one of the 75 distinguished FEU alumni in the coffee table book, “FEU Alumni Achievers: Diamond Edition.” He was also conferred the “Outstanding Alumni Award” during the University’s 75th founding anniversary. Last April 2023, Dr. Junn was invited to attend the annual exclusive lunch with the FEU President and the Chair.
