Remembering Dr. Francisco Sionil Jose

A National Artist and FEU Alumnus

F. Sionil Jose, as he was popularly called, was a very well-respected writer and alumnus of Far Eastern University. His fellows recognized him for his lifelong dedication and contribution to Philippine Literature. The memorable artistry and creativity of his writings, short stories and novels, and courageous portrayal as a journalist, critic, and commitment to the academe merited him this respect and several recognitions hold here and abroad. In 1980 he was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for journalism, literature, and creative communication arts. On April 7, 2020, Far Eastern University, Manila, conferred him a Doctor of Literature degree (honoris causa). In the succeeding year, he was bestowed The National Artist of the Philippines Award for Literature. Dr. Jose also received numerous awards and recognition from the Philippine National Press Club, The City of Manila, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the Palanca Memorial Awards, among others. 

Dr. Jose died on January 6, 2022, at 97. However, the contribution of Dr. F. Sionil Jose in the field of literature will always be remembered by his readers.
