In 2012, the late Dr. Fortune Tam-Kennedy, one of the pioneers of FEUNAFInc.USA envisioned creating a legacy for Dr. Lydia A. Palaypay in the form of a Foundation. It was a year later, after Dr. Kennedy’s passing, when an ad-hoc committee was formed to create the foundation, which would be known as the “Lydia Arao Palaypay Endowment” Fund. (LAPE). During the Grand Reunion held in Detroit in 2014, LAPE, with an initial funding of $20K, was formally launched. Present during this occasion were Dr. Michael Alba, President of FEU; Dr. Belinda Buenafe from Class ’76; Dean of FEU-IN and the honoree, Dr. Lydia A. Palaypay. By January 2016, the funding had reached $50K. During the Grand Reunion in Manila 2016, FEUNAF USA President Nelson Co presented a check of $50K to FEU Chair Aurelio Montinola and Chair Emeritus Dr. Lourdes Montinola, and FEU President Michael Alba. On February 2019, an additional $6K was presented which is to be used as a start-up fund to start the LAPE scholarship during the school year 2019-2020 for three years at $2K per year.
Current Scholars and Beneficiaries
Scholars Profile
Daniel F. Garcia is an incoming 3rd year BS Nursing student. He lives in Bacoor, Cavite, and rents in a dormitory in Sampaloc, Manila. Dan is the youngest of three children. His father is a retired seaman, and his mother is a plain housewife. Unfortunately, his mother is terminally ill from a brain tumor. Most of their finances went to his mom’s operation and medications. Currently, Dan’s eldest sibling takes care of the finances for their ailing mother, while the secondborn helps provide for his studies.
Dan used to be a Nicanor Reyes Sr. Scholarship program grantee. It is a feat given to the top 20 students in the FEUCAT. However, his scholarship was revoked due to a C+ grade from his Nutrition and Diet Therapy class.
Despite the financial challenges, Dan is eager to continue and finish his studies. He joined the FEU Bamboo Band to avail himself of the tuition fee subsidy. However, the aid that he enjoys is not enough as the bigger portion of the fees comes from miscellaneous and laboratory fees.
Apart from being intellectually inclined, Dan is multi-talented. He writes, plays musical instruments, and he sings well. Dan is also a consistent honor student. Dan expects to be part of the Dean’s Honor List this semester.
Jezelle Ann R. Tipon-Tipon is a 3rd year BS Nursing student. She is the youngest of four children, born to a simple housewife and a retired father. Her father’s pension is their only source of income, the majority of which goes to her parents’ medical expenditures, who are both hypertensive and diabetic.
Jezelle wants to be a medical doctor one day. However, due to financial difficulties, she may no longer attend medical school. But she is eager to pursue either Master of Nursing or Medical-Surgical Nursing after passing the PNLE.
Jezelle is a bookworm. Reading makes her feel that she is in a new world. Apart from reading, she is also fascinated with science.
