Tamaraw Nurses in the US Fear the Possible Resurgence of Coronavirus

Ms. Laarni Florencio – New York Presbyterian Hospital Program Director

Tamaraw Nurses and other Filipino nurses community in the US fear the possible second wave of the coronavirus, according to a report last January 15, 2021, by the New York Times.

The survey conducted last September by National Nurses United revealed that 67 or one-third of those who succumb to the COVID-19 virus were Filipinos.

Increasing cases were reported in New York since the start of the year. The growing infection rate and hospitalization are causing alarm due to the possibility of experiencing the influx of patients again which stretches the capacity of hospitals similar to March to April 2020.

Laarni Florencio, an FEU Alumna and member of the board of the Philippine Nurses Association of New York, was interviewed by the New York Times and said “Our hospitals look like battlegrounds.”  “We were hearing stories about how depressed the nurses felt, about how they were crying at work. The emotional toll for health care providers is tough. We are supposed to be healers.” That is the reason why she decided to conduct several zoom meetings at the height of the pandemic to help nurses deal with mental health issues.

Allow us to take this opportunity to honor our FEU nursing alumni who passed away last year.
